About Iain Bushell

Iain Bushell has over 30 years of progressive leadership experience with a diverse background in municipal administration, fire and emergency services, emergency management, and military aviation. A strong relationship builder who believes in delivering excellence in customer service to both internal and external stakeholders, Iain believes in breaking down barriers and letting the amazing people of his organizations get on with their jobs. He is a proven critical thinker with strong financial management skills and strategic planning ability. Iain is politically astute with the ability to deliver logical recommendations to decision makers at the municipal, provincial and national level. Iain has held portfolios in finance, human resources, operations, community services and infrastructure services, giving him broad experience and a thorough understanding of municipal operations. Experienced in health and safety initiatives and a true believer in community risk reduction, he has championed OHS programs targeting cancer reduction and mental health. He believes in building trust and is skilled in labour relations, the professional development of both union and non-union staff, and conflict resolution. Iain brings a fun, inclusive and energetic presence to his organization as he drives to achieve the vision of a vibrant and engaged community. Iain served as an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force, spent sixteen years with Strathcona County Emergency Services including four years as Fire Chief and served as the Deputy Chief of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the fourth largest fire service in the world. He then led a dedicated team in Morinville, Alberta as the General Manager of Community and Infrastructure Services. Iain's current role is as the Director of Emergency Management and Community Safety at the City of Calgary. Serving over 1.3 million people in Canada's best city, his team includes the Calgary Emergency Management Agency, Calgary 9-1-1, Community Standards Enforcement, Animal Services, Public Vehicle Standards (Transit and Livery Safety) and Optimization Services. As part of the larger Community Services Department, Iain's career purpose is to make the community a little better today than it was yesterday.
