About Iain Tyson

I've been teaching, surveying and tapping rocks all over the world. I recently moved back to California after teaching in several different states. I grew up between Scotland and northern England and returned to Scotland at the University of Aberdeen, gained my first degree and worked as a geologist, designer, draftsman and computer designer for the oil industry. I surfed new technology in the handover between drawing and CAD and I worked on contracts specifically involving pipelines, valve systems and converting manual planimetery into programs for both oilfield revitalisation and directional drilling. When I realised I was more for the environment than against it, I moved back to England to get my teaching qualification in High School and Adult Education Sciences. I taught in Wales for 7 years before jumping continents in After the double culture shock of immediately teaching on the Navajo Reservation, I've taught and surveyed my way around the States, from jet boat surveying the Yellowstone River for the COE to surveying and working with a Wally Cunningham design for a fairly well known guitarists hilltop mansion in Malibu. I've taught science in all its forms for over 30 years and still get a buzz finding a good fossilized fish in Topanga Canyon or gold panning in secret locations. I've played rugby, field hockey, cricket and soccer and have taught self defense, swimming, kayaking and mountaineering/earth science/environmentalism to anyone who'll listen. I also do a lot of rodding because I never catch a single fish. I love live music even though I'm not a musician (I'm a drummer.) and have worked with some of my favorite bands touring around the world. I'm proud to say, I'm still an avid AC/DC fan after all these years. I devour science fiction or a good atlas and get distracted for hours by nanotechnology, quantum physics and a good recipe.
