About Ian Birl

Through my years of education and employment in the architectural field, I consistently focus on two factors or design. One being the artistry of design. How a building or 3 dimensional object can be evocative to the the viewer and the user. How this object draws people into it and what kind of aura it wants to bring upon the user, whether that aura is inviting, interest, assertive, or a specific message the owner wants to present. The second and most important factor of design I focus on is how the user interacts with the space. How does the layout of the space guide the user through it in a way that feels natural but is also how the owner of the space wants the occupants to use it. For example in residential spaces, the house wants to feel inviting and allow guests to occupy the space comfortably, while allowing the homeowner to use the space efficiently for their everyday needs. Where as in cooperate spaces, owners typically have consumers and employee spaces, so how does a buildings layout guide each demographic into the correct space. These lines of thinking force me to place myself in the occupants place and mimic their psyche in order to design them properly.
