About Ian Whitton

Ian Whitton is an Industry Director specialising in Railways in Australia and Asia with AECOM. He has over 35 years experience. He is currently leading the Independent Reviewer team on the Metro Tunnel project in Melbourne - a 9km underground rail linking 2 operational railways with 5 new stations. Before this he spent 3 years as Project Manager for the Technical Advisor for the Sydney Metro - City & Southwest Project. Based in Hong Kong for more than 25 years, he has also worked in the UK, India, Thailand, Mongolia, Indonesia, and the Middle East. He has had almost continuous involvement on design and planning of metro projects in Hong Kong, Australia and overseas since 1995. He has also worked on design of roads, container terminals, Bus Rapid Transit systems, Automatic People Mover systems, and ferry terminals. On Light Rail, he worked on Docklands Light Rail in the UK. He has also worked on many rail depot designs. Freight projects include: the northern freight yard and the port rail project in Hong Kong; coal freight electrification and Bankable Feasibility Study in Mongolia; and a coal rail study in Indonesia. In 2004/2005, he was the Project Manager in Australia on the design and implementation of 15 projects across Sydney to improve the reliability and efficiency of the suburban rail network.
