About Ignacio Carellan

Ignacio Carellan – Expert in Solar Inverter Reliability I am an engineer and PhD in Engineering & Design from Brunel University London, with extensive experience in power electronics and solar inverter reliability. My career began in 2011 at the Brunel Innovation Center in Cambridge, where I worked on the development of non-destructive testing (NDT) and inspection techniques for structures and renewable energy systems. I led a research team in power ultrasonics and its application in advanced structural fault detection. During this time, I initiated my first projects in renewable energy, exploring applications in wind turbines, solar panels, and power conversion systems. In 2018, I joined Ingeteam Services as an R&D Manager, deepening my expertise in power electronics applied to solar inverters. I led projects on reliability, testing, and converter optimization, validating equipment to enhance performance and resilience under extreme conditions. From 2019, I joined Kiwa PI Berlin, expanding my experience with inverter, transformer, and power converter manufacturers. I have worked with leading manufacturers worldwide, including SMA, Power Electronics, Ingeteam, ABB, Hitachi, General Electric, and TMEIC. I have inspected over 35 GW of solar inverters, audited factories for batteries, transformers, and inverters, and supervised more than 80 tests, providing key recommendations to improve reliability and performance. I have also worked on major inverter procurement projects, overseeing 3.6 GW and 4.7 GW in manufacturing, as well as energy storage projects of 360 MW / 1400 MWh, ensuring technical compliance and testing optimization. My expertise has led me to serve as a jury member for the PV Magazine Awards and as a speaker at the NREL Workshop on Inverter Reliability in Colorado. Additionally, I contribute to updating international standards such as IEC 62093, applying my knowledge in reliability, testing, and failure analysis of solar inverters to improve the safety and performance of photovoltaic systems. In 2024, I founded Inverter Advisor, a technical consultancy specializing in solar inverters, transformers, and energy storage, with the goal of helping large companies minimize risks, optimize equipment performance, and ensure the success of their solar projects.
