About Ikeshia Smith

Regarding community advocacy, I specialize in conducting mental health focus groups that provide psychoeducation and a wide range of resources to religious institutions and study the mental health effects of gun violence. Currently, I work on the Infant and Early Childhood Intervention team as a Health Service Psychologist, where I conduct psychological evaluations, consultation services, and provide supervision to students from APA-accredited programs. In addition, I work as an independent contractor as a Licensed Social Worker and offer individual therapy to children and adults. My past experience consist of working as an overnight Emergency Mental Health Therapist/Crisis Counselor with SMI population while working closely with area hospitals and psychiatric facilities. Previously, I've worked at Child Protective Services to address abuse and neglect, and as the Director of Medical Social Work at a home health agency offering counseling, intake assessments, and safety plans for geriatric patients in crisis. I've trained and supervised social workers as well as created a weekend suicide prevention program and conducted monthly diversity and educational trainings for medical staff. I've worked with the Appalachian leadership management teams to create Social Justice and Equity Program manual, influenced diversity hiring policies and practices at a local group practice, and developed strategic planning and implementation models to grow small non-profit organizations. I've completed various trainings related to child development and trauma as well as worked closely with the Research Director to revise and evaluate newly grant funded initiatives focused on maternal vitality with predominately Black mothers.
