Background
About Ilja Arts
Ilja Arts leads the research line on Systems Medicine of Chronic Diseases, which aims to elucidate biological mechanisms that play a role in the development and prognosis of cardiometabolic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The research generates novel biomarkers, new leads for prevention and treatment, and improved risk stratification, thus enabling a biology-based approach to personalized health. It involves the integration of large, multi-dimensional data (genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, microbiome, clinical, lifestyle) from deep-phenotyped cohorts with genome scale metabolic and dynamical models, and pathway and network models. Prof. Arts obtained a PhD in Human Nutrition (Wageningen, 2001), a MSc in Epidemiology (Rotterdam, and a MSc in Human Nutrition and Health (Cum Laude; Wageningen 1994). In 2004 she received a VENI Talent Scheme Grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Prof. Arts has generated over 5.7 M€ competitive funding as applicant or co-applicant. Funders include NWO, ZonMW, Public Private Partnerships (e.g. Top Institute Food and Nutrition, Carbohydrate Competence Centre), EU-H2020, and Province of Limburg. She is an experienced supervisor of PhD candidates and has published over 88 peer reviewed scientific papers in international journals. She has extensive experience in developing, coordinating, and teaching courses in a variety of topics at the Bachelor, Master, and post-doctoral level and has initiated and developed courses in innovative topics such as molecular epidemiology that are now part of the standard curricula. Prof. Arts is a member of the board of the Netherlands Bioinformatics & Systems Biology research school BioSB, member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Dutch Techcentre for Life Sciences (DTL), and is a board member for the NWO Domain Science (ENW).
