Background
About Ilja Fescenko
In 2007 Dr. Fescenko started his research career in the laboratory of Prof. Auzinsh, in Latvia. In 2009 Dr. Fescenko defended his Master’s thesis on Experimental studies of the coherent population trapping in molecules. In 2010-2011 Dr. Fescenko won two consecutive Fellowships from the European Social Fund for doctoral studies. To promote his scientific growth, Dr. Fescenko spent eight months in the group of Prof. Hänsch at the Max-Plank Institute of Quantum Optics in Germany, studying techniques of laser stabilization and performing experiments with whispering gallery mode resonators. There, he gained unique experience working in the group doing some of the World’s most precise spectroscopic measurements, as acknowledged by the Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to his advisor Prof. Hänsch in 2005. In 2012 Dr. Fescenko won the Sciex Fellowship and joined the research group of Prof. Antoine Weis at the University of Fribourg. He carried out mapping of a magnetic field by laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy and was involved in teaching a laboratory course about lasers. In one year he returned to Latvia with two new publications, and in 2014, Dr. Fescenko defended his PhD thesis, one of the opponents of which was Prof. Budker. His thesis is based on four high quality publications in well-regarded journals. After completing his PhD, Dr. Fescenko won a visiting scientist grant in the University of Fribourg for three months in Prof. Weis’ group. That visit has been recently completed with a new publication in Applies Physics Letters. In 2016, Dr. Fescenko joined as a postdoc to the group of Prof. Acosta at the University of New Mexico where he is involved in external-spin-detection experiments and nanofabrications.
