Background

About Imen Hammami

I am a PhD student in Physics Engineering and a Research Fellow at i3N – University of Aveiro, working at the intersection of materials science, nanotechnology, and biomedical engineering. My work focuses on the design, synthesis, and multi-scale characterization of biomaterials, particularly advanced coatings for implants. I hold a Master’s degree in Condensed Matter Physics: Materials and Nanostructures, from the University of Sfax in December 2017. My MSc thesis was conducted in collaboration with IMT Lille Douai, France, and the LaMaCoP laboratory in Sfax, where I investigated polymer-based nanocomposites with gas and liquid barrier properties. Through this, I gained hands-on expertise in twin-screw extrusion, DSC, TMDSC, Flash-DSC, and advanced spectroscopic and structural characterization (FTIR, Raman, XRD, SEM, Impedance). My academic journey is also marked by a year of research at the University of Aveiro through the Erasmus+ KA1 program, where I deepened my understanding of biodegradable polymer–nanocomposites, focusing on their structural, electrical, and morphological analysis. In 2020, I joined the P2020 ORAiDEA project at i3N–Aveiro, contributing to the development of multifunctional dental implants, where I expanded my knowledge in biomaterials for tissue engineering and implant coatings, including biological testing and full material characterization. Currently, I am engaged as a research Fellow at i3N–Aveiro. My work involves synthesizing and evaluating modified 45S5 bioglasses for functional coatings on implant surfaces. My research includes oxide doping, surface engineering, and characterization of structural, electrical, and biological properties to enhance osseointegration and antimicrobial performance.
