If my 17-year old self, who was dressed up as an Amazonian tribal princess and ready to shoot her next scene in another episode of “Peter Benchley’s Amazon,” had been told that decades later she would be a mom (of twins!) with a Master’s degree and working in EdTech for one of the world’s top universities, I would probably have responded with “Wait, so time travel is real?” This scenario illustrates two points:(1) I was and still am a big fan of “Back To The Future” (2) A fulfilling career in media production does not have to follow one single trajectory Between the days of wrestling an anaconda in the Amazon River (fact check: I actually had a stunt double who did that scene) to spearheading a community of practice for educational media developers and designers (it’s called MADE and you can learn more about it here: https://edtech.engineering.utoronto.ca/blog/introducing-made-u-t), I’ve produced award-winning original promo content for TV networks, written and performed in shows for Just For Laughs and The Canadian Comedy Awards, and worked with some of Canada’s leading filmmakers to develop creative marketing material for their films. Oh, and there may have been this one time that I convinced a large pharmaceutical company to shoot a dance music video in their offices and labs. I’ve also been doing this long enough to know that a great career is not just encompassed by the projects and tasks we work on but in the ways we challenge ourselves to grow and learn. I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with countless talented and inspirational people from different industries and walks of life. I became a mother of (amazing) twins and re-discovered my love for storytelling and play. I am an active member in communities focused on women in tech and innovative storytelling. And my always curious nature eventually led me to pursue a graduate degree with a research and design focus on interactive audio narratives. This is all to say that if you are interested in creative thinking, innovative tech in media and education, thoughtful storytelling and design, or the possibilities of time travel in a DeLorean…we should probably talk.
