Background
About Ingrid Boas
Ingrid is a Professor of Climate Mobilities at the Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University. Ingrid’s research is based in the fields of environmental change, mobilities, and governance, and is specialised in the subject of environmental/climate change-related migration/mobility/immobility. Currently her focus is to further study the political and power dimensions of climate im/mobilities. This is informed by two research programmes that she is leading: The first is on climate mobilities in the Bengal, West African, and Pacific borderlands, funded through a personal VIDI grant by the Dutch Scientific Organisation, involving three PhD projects. The second is on mobile forms of cultural heritage in relation to the impacts of climate change (projects) for (semi-)nomadic indigenous livelihoods, funded through the Belmont Forum and JPI Climate and done in collaboration with Mahidol University and University of Vienna, and other project partners in the Netherlands, Ethiopia, Thailand, Austria, and Senegal. In addition she supervises several other PhD and master thesis projects, concentrating on climate and environmental mobilities in other regions, such as the Netherlands, the Caribbean, and Chile, and takes part in an NWA consortium on climate resilience in diverse African contexts. Ingrid works on the subject of climate change and human mobility since 2007. She holds a PhD in International Relations, obtained at the University of Kent (UK) in February 2014, on the securitisation of climate migration, funded by the UK Economic Social Research Council. Ingrid has been a visiting fellow with the United Nations University – Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, Tokyo (2014); the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing (2016/17); and with the Migration Policy Centre at the European University Institute, Florence(2020) with the Migration Policy Centre (EUI, Florance) in 2021. She furthermore co-founded of the Environmental & Climate Mobilities Network, is research fellow with the Earth System Governance Network; member of the scientific steering committee of the PERN network; member of the Management Committee of the EU COST ACTION on climate change and migration and on Drylands facing change (both actions ended); and serves as an expert on climate mobility for the EU, the Dutch Government, the UN and for several NGOs.
