About Irem Ulku

Postdoctoral Researcher in Pharmacology & Therapeutics at McGill University studying Alzheimer Disease, particularly the enzymes involved in Amyloid-β clearance, biomarker research, and assay development, specialized in Biochemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology techniques. I am passionate about basic science, so I did my undergrad in Molecular Biology and Genetics and I did Chemistry double major to have a better understanding of the basis of biological systems and how molecules interact to maintain homeostasis or why they fail to function in a way that causes diseases. I completed my Ph.D. in Neuroscience focusing on molecular pathways leading to Amyloid-β peptide production and clearance implicated in Alzheimer Disease. I believe communicating and interacting with people is as important as doing research; therefore, I did a Psychology minor during my undergrad studies, which helped me develop a more humanitarian approach in life. Instead of the awards and scholarships I have received, I prefer to be known as a caring trustworthy person because I am not doing research just to achieve my career goals. My dream is to leave something valuable for the people suffering from the disease. Ultimately, my passion for science serves to make this dream come true.
