Background
About Iris Herrero
Licensed Psychologist Registered Art Therapist (ATR) M.A Psychology with emphasis in Art Therapy Specialties: Trauma, Somatic Art Therapy Bilingual, Bicultural, Native Spanish speaking Clinician Jin Shin Jyutsu Practitioner (energy work) Artist I love working with clients as they strive to know themselves better by understanding their choices and behaviors and in so doing to develop better relationships and problem-solving skills. In this pursuit, I teach clients to pick from a wide range of tools (see below) to facilitate them accessing answers from within, thereby, empowering their ability to develop wholeness and self-sufficiency. The majority of my work involves clients dealing with trauma issues. Academically, both my master’s thesis and my doctoral dissertation have focused on psychological trauma resulting in my development of a unique treatment for this type of trauma. Specifically, this intervention intersperses both art therapy and a somatic breathing practice (based on Jin Shin Jyutsu, see below) with talk therapy, resulting in positive outcomes that produce lasting changes. I became an art therapist because it is a profession that unites my passions- art-making and creativity- with the exploration of the psyche. Subsequently, I earned a doctorate in Clinical Phycology, which has further increased my ability to help clients in their quest to create the life they want to live. My work includes somatic therapy which enhances the connection between mind and body. My interest in this type of therapy comes from my experience as a Jin Shin Jyutsu (body-based energy healing) practitioner, in which I witnessed clients releasing emotions and realizing a greater sense of self-awareness. In addition, I have also practiced mindfulness meditation and on occasion incorporate it into my therapy sessions. In closing, I work with a wide range of individuals, including LGBTQ and individuals from multicultural backgrounds. Furthermore, I am a bilingual and bicultural native Spanish speaker and have abundant experience working with Latino clients.
