About Iryn Bijker
The aim of my research is to distinguish industrial-age lead white pigment from its traditional variant. Lead white has been produced since antiquity and dominated the artist’s palette until the 20th century, after which it was gradually replaced because of its toxicity. Due to its omnipresence, lead white shows great potential for dating purposes and provenance research of artworks.However, unlike traditionally produced lead white, industrial-age lead white has barely been researched.Therefore, in my research I want to chemically characterize the different sub-types of industrial-age lead white, so that we can assist conservators, restorers and art historians with challenges concerning the authenticity of paint layers and degradation phenomenon.
