About Isabel Cox

I have a wide range of interests and skills: as long as it's mission-driven and in line with my values, I'm in! Over the last few years, I have tried my hand at writing policy, one-on-one case management, diversity, equity, and inclusion work, sailing coaching and instructing at a range of levels, graphic design, ethnographic research, social media management.and I have enjoyed learning about it all. I designed my own concentration at Brown, called Human Rights & the Refugee Experience, in order to study the complex interactions between individuals and systems in the global human rights context. My coursework, research, and relationships built with others helped to form the beliefs that I hold today-"Each of us is more than the worst thing we've ever done."- Bryan Stevenson - Every human being deserves safe housing, nutritious food, clean water, clean air, and sufficient healthcare- It is important to explore the reasons people disagree with me and do my best to foster a productive conversation, based in respect and understanding, when possible. It's also important to know when to walk away.(a Braver Angels philosophy)- There is a place in sailing for everyone. Everybody has something to teach and something to learn- We should do our best to consider the wellbeing of the planet and its most vulnerable people in decisions we make- Everything is connected. Every action matters when we all do something- Computerized translation, AI, or even an in-person interpreter cannot replace the value of communicating with someone in their own language. Both in my professional career and otherwise, I strive to spend my time in line with these values. It can take many forms-from studying ASL to picking up trash to volunteering with Providence Emergency Management-but it is all part of the same project.
