About Isabel Duque

Isabel M. Duque has dedicated her professional life in Education in service to others: as an English and Creative writing teacher, a yoga instructor, an advocate for social justice, storytelling and equitable access — and currently as a Research and Instructional librarian at Miami Dade College. She has a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science, and a Bachelor's Degree in English with a minor in Film studies. Her life’s work is to transform the library landscape in higher education as a holding space for open pedagogy. At Miami Dade College, she has led the OER movement for students and faculty to engage as well as create affordable learning materials. She has created EDI conscious library programming for the last seven years where communities of practice have been nurtured to hold critical dialogue about current events, empathy and self discovery. Isabel has created a curriculum framework in which interdisciplinary symposiums occur collegewide, and all materials and presentations have been preserved in what she sponsored, the MDC digital commons. In addition, she has published an article in the 2023 ACRL Undergraduate best practices journal, presented at a number of local and national conferences, and recently won a Librarian scholarship to attend the Key West literary Seminar 2023. One of her greatest accomplishments is the creation of MDC's Center for Innovative Teaching & Learning. Isabel’s areas of interest are in literary fiction, critical pedagogy, permaculture, and liberation studies, all of which are avenues to develop multiple literacies, community, and self. Outside the classroom, she enjoys: Gardening, playing soccer, dancing, painting, yoga, and being in good company (both with people and furry friends).
