Background

About Isabel Scheuneman Scott

I am a Professor in the Criminology Department at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. In all my work, I center women, Indigenous perspectives, and people experiencing criminalization. My areas of interest include: decolonizing criminology; criminalized and incarcerated women and girls; Indigenous women and justice; critical feminist and Indigenous methodologies; the sociology of punishment; social inequality and social justice; harm and violence; and (self) representations. I graduated with my PhD in Sociology from the University of Alberta where my work was supported by numerous scholarships such as a SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship. My research is decidedly interdisciplinary, with a specialization in Criminology. I also draw from critical and Indigenous feminisms, Indigenous studies, sociology, and cultural studies. My doctoral work focused on Indigenous women's prison storytelling at the former Prison for Women (P4W) in Kingston, Ontario. I was awarded my MA in Criminology from the University of Ottawa in 2015, where my work was also supported by numerous scholarships such as a SSHRC, as well as provincial funding from the Ontario Graduate Scholarship, among others. I graduated with my BA in Criminology (major) and Psychology (minor) from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in 2012. There, I received an award for my research and volunteer work with people experiencing homelessness. I have professional experience as an instructor at the University of Alberta and Norquest College. At U of A, I designed and taught a third year undergraduate Sociology course. At Norquest College, I was based at Edmonton Remand Centre where my students were incarcerated. I have also been a teaching assistant at the University of Alberta and the University of Ottawa. Moreover, I have professional research experience as a research assistant at the University of Alberta and Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Beyond the academy, I have professional experience as a youth worker at Covenant House Vancouver, and a shelter worker at Options Community Services. I was also a supervisor for court-ordered family visitations. Please see my profile below for more details about these and other experiences, such as my volunteering and service work.
