Background
About Isabelle Gibson
Boozhoo / Bonjour / Hello, My name is Isabelle Gibson. I am Ojibway from Turtle Clan and a member of Biigtigong Nishnaabeg (Ojibways of Pic River), located along the north shore of Lake Superior in northern Ontario. I was born and raised on unceded Lheidli T'enneh territory in Prince George, British Columbia, and am currently located on Lək̓ʷəŋən traditional territory in Esquimalt, BC. I recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Ottawa with an Honours Bachelor of Social Science in Conflict Studies and Human Rights, with a minor in Indigenous Studies in the French Immersion stream and with cooperative education (CO-OP). During my time at uOttawa, I was deeply ingrained within the student community, actively participating in the Indigenous Students' Association and taking on a leadership role as President of the Conflict Studies & Human Rights Students' Association. Additionally, I took advantage of hands-on learning opportunities, traveling to southern Bahia, Brazil to complete a field research course and undertaking a directed research project. Throughout my degree, I gained diverse professional experience working with Indigenous organizations and the federal government. My work has focused on areas such as modern treaty negotiation and implementation, international Indigenous rights (including at the United Nations), Métis intergovernmental relations, and Indigenous natural resource major projects. These opportunities have deepened my understanding of the complexities of Indigenous rights and governance, fueling my passion for advocacy and justice. Looking ahead, I have accepted an offer from the University of Victoria, Faculty of Law to join their Joint Degree in Canadian Common Law and Indigenous Legal Orders (JD/JID program) in Fall 2025. I am eager to join the UVic law community for the next four year and to dedicate my career to working alongside Indigenous Nations, helping to affirm and implement our inherent and treaty rights. If you’d like to connect - whether to share career insights or to simply have a conversation - I’d love to hear from you. Miigwetch / Merci / Thank you.
