As Director of NIU's Center for Southeast Asian Studies, I work to-Define the center's mission, scope and objectives, and provide leadership to accomplish in collaboration with the faculty council and its committees-Coordinate the selection and hiring of employees, assign and supervise workload and schedules; develop and administer operational policies consistent with university policies; manage the center's activities-Oversee the instructional, research, artistic, outreach and public-service activities of the center-Schedule courses and provide student advising; manage the Southeast Asian studies certificate, minor, and other center curricula-Propose curricular recommendations and revisions-Plan, obtain, budget, allocate and manage resources including overseeing the writing and submission of Dept of Education Title VI grant proposals and reports and coordinating and implementing projects and activities that maintain the center’s National Resource Center status-Identify, write, submit and report on grants from other funding sources including the US Dept of State, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Luce Foundation, and Southeast Asian consulates-Present an annual report of expenditures and strategize with center associates on activities and budgets at an annual retreat-Participate in fund-raising in the United States and Southeast Asia; cultivate contacts with, and develop mentorship initiatives by, alumni of the Southeast Asian studies program-Serve as spokesperson for all communications and transactions. Promote and encourage Southeast Asian Studies, including the recruitment of undergraduate minors and graduate students-Represent the center at scholarly conferences, design and oversee weekly colloquiums during the academic year, work with NIU and Cornell University Press on Southeast Asia series publications, oversee communications, promote and enhance the NIU library's Southeast Asia Collection-Conduct evaluations of employees and take necessary personnel actions-Mentor and review joint hire faculty for promotion and tenure-Co-teach a core Southeast Asia studies course, and teach one Anthropology course pertinent to Southeast Asian studies, each year-Demonstrate dynamic and effective leadership skills, a shared-governance orientation, and strong interpersonal skills-Maintain tenure and rank of Full Professor through regular faculty reviews-Pursue an active research and scholarly agenda consistent with a R2 (high research) academic institution.
