Early in my career, I worked with a manager who taught me something I have never forgotten, not through anything he said, but through his presence in a room. He always knew exactly where he was going - and got there. He listened more than he spoke. And when he finally did speak, everything shifted his way, not because he demanded it, but because he had already done the thinking while everyone else was still catching up. That was the first time I understood what real leadership actually looks like, and it has shaped how I work ever since. I have spent more than a decade in executive search, working globally across energy and chemicals, life sciences, consumer goods, and advanced industrials. I often started with more curiosity than expertise, which turned out to be an advantage because I learned to read people before I learned to categorize them. The risk in a senior leadership appointment is rarely a lack of capability on paper. More often, it is a misjudgment of who someone actually is when the conditions stop being favorable. Like: how they think under pressure, how they lead in a challenging environment, and whether the person you met in the interview is the same one who shows up when things get hard. The leaders I trust are the ones who stand by their values and serve as a compass for what is right, not just convenient. They are so consistent in who they are that they cannot fake it. It is not a pose, it is part of their identity. Credentials and track record matter, but they tell you what someone has done, not who they really are. Before recommending a candidate for a leadership role, I need to understand how they think about leadership itself, how they use influence, how they make decisions, and whether they have the kind of mind that keeps growing rather than defending what it already knows. My goal is not a placement that looks right at the start. It is a leader who holds a steady course when things get hard. Today, I work with Borderless, a boutique global executive search firm built on the belief that finding the right leader is a deeply human process, not a matching exercise. Originally from Prague, Czech Republic, I operate across the U.S, Europe, and globally, speaking English, Czech, and German.
