Background
About J. Benton
I am a Senior Computer Science Researcher in the Intelligent Systems Division at NASA’s Ames Research Center, where I work on advanced AI systems for spaceflight and aerospace operations. My research at NASA has included:* Earth-independent operations via automated procedure generation* Autonomous systems for crewed and uncrewed spacecraft* Multi-agent planning for autonomous maintenance robots* AI-assisted safety monitoring in aviation cockpit operations* Autonomy for aircraft flight* High-fidelity simulations of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) airspace trafficI also serve as President of the International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling (ICAPS) and have spoken on behalf of NASA at maker and science fiction conventions (including SiliCon and ST-SF, among others).Science community engagement is a longstanding priority for me. In addition to reviewing, moderating, and chairing sessions, I’ve held several service roles, including:AI Research Community* ICAPS Executive Council (term 2019-2026)* President (term 2024-2026)* President-elect (term 2022-2024)* Conference Liaison (term 2020-2022)* Inclusion Chair (term 2019-2021)* ICAPS Diversity and Inclusion Committee* AI Magazine Associate Editor (2022-2024)* International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling (ICAPS) 2019 Conference Co-chair (with Siddharth Srivastava)NASA* Ames Disabilities Advocates - Volunteer (2024)* ARC Advisory Group - Chair (2019-2023), Vice Chair (2018-2019)Before joining NASA, I worked at Smart Information Flow Technologies (SIFT), a small R&D company applying cutting-edge AI and human-factors research across domains. My work there focused on DARPA-funded cybersecurity automation, NASA-funded automated analysis of crew procedures for spaceflight, and planning and scheduling systems for autonomous vehicles.I earned my Ph.D. in Computer Science from Arizona State University, advised by Subbarao Kambhampati.Current areas of interest include automated open-world planning, AI applications for autonomous systems, planning with resource constraints, combinatorial search-based problem solving, and human-robot interaction.
