Jaan Taagepera is a mechanical engineer with experience working for a major engineering and construction firm and directly for a refinery. He is currently working for the Chevron Technical Center (successor to the former ETC). CTC can be thought of as Chevron’s internal consulting firm and is charged with providing engineering support and development throughout the corporation and affiliates. Jaan served 10 years as the Team Leader of the team which is responsible for providing pressure vessel, atmospheric storage tank, piping stress and vibration, Fitness for Service and post-construction repair of vessels and piping support to the corporation’s operating facilities. In addition, the team is charged with developing and maintaining the corporate pressure vessel standards (CES-PVM) and post construction repair standards for piping and vessels (CES-PCR), tank standards (CES-TAM) and some of the piping standards (CES-PIM). Starting in 2021 he has happily reverted to a senior subject matter expert role. In addition to providing support for upstream facilities, Jaan is the named “Vessel Expert” for the wholly owned refineries. Jaan is a member of the ASME Post Construction Committee and two term Chair of that committee’s Subcommittee on Repair and Testing which has the primary responsibility of developing and maintaining ASME PCC-2,"Repair of Pressure Equipment and Piping". He focuses on pressure vessel design and analysis and has served on the ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping Division’s Design and Analysis committee for several years. He is currently a general member after serving a term as Chair following roughly 10 years as Secretary of that committee. Jaan has published 30 peer reviewed papers, primarily at the annual ASME Pressure Vessel and Piping Division conferences but also with Mechanical Engineering magazine and Chemical Engineering Progress magazine, and the Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology. In addition, he has been granted four US Patents for inventions developed during his work at Chevron which relate to pressure equipment and piping.
