About Jaap Daalhuizen

Design Thinking & Innovation | Design Methodology | People-Centric | Design Researcher | Design Teacher Studying and teaching design & innovation. My aim is to push the field forward on multiple levels. in close collaboration with industry. always grounded in an in-depth understanding of design & innovation theory and methodology and with a keen eye for industrial relevance and value. I always aim to deliver results that are accessible and usable for my audiences. Whether I am implementing research in industry, articulating methods and strategies for students or developing (online) courses, I believe that impact comes from quality + collaboration + relevance + usability. I believe that impact is achieved through involving and collaborating with (interdisciplinary) partners, stakeholders and users. It's also the most fun! I define design as the effort to devise courses of action that aim to change existing situations into preferred ones (just like Nobel-prize winner Herbert Simon did) and see it as a powerful approach to innovation. I believe it can be applied to many different fields if done well. From smartphones to healthcare systems to societal or environmental problems. In the end, design & innovation efforts need to be organized to maximize the value for multiple stakeholders: users, customers, clients all need to benefit from the outcome of design & innovation processes. One of the main contributions of the design discipline is that it offers key enabling methodologies that empower people to innovate to tackle complex challenges together. My core research work is focused on design methodology. I explore how processes, methods and tools support innovators and teams and how they could do this even better. I use my in-depth understanding of design & innovation theory and relevant fields of (cognitive) science to push the design discipline further. I enjoy bringing the knowledge and expertise of diverse disciplines together to create valuable results. I welcome and enjoy collaborative projects with industry and public sector that aim to show and improve innovation practices and that progress our understanding of design driven innovation and raise new research questions.
