Background

About Jack Chester

Achieving 4 A*s at A-Level as an academic scholar at Warwick School won me a place at Imperial College London to study the UK’s leading Mechanical Engineering MEng Degree. During this 4 year course, I flourished in modules such as Advanced Stress Analysis, Finite Element Analysis, Manufacturing Technology & Management, Mechanical Transmissions Technology, and Fracture Mechanics. I also excelled in my final year research project, which saw me collaborate with top orthopaedic surgeons to inform optimal treatment of long bone fractures and help suppress the prevalence of non-unions in today’s society. More specifically, I developed an intricate, novel and tuneable FE framework that allowed yielding of long bone fracture constructs, fracture site stability, and healing potential to be quantitatively and simultaneously assessed with accuracy and precision for the first time. Since graduating top of class with first class honours and a total of 14 academic awards to my name, I have been working at Procter and Chester (Measurements) Ltd providing specialist load cell manufacturing, strain gauging and force calibration services as a member of a highly skilled team that is repeatedly trusted by discerning industry leaders to solve the most unique and demanding measurement challenges globally. To date, I have successfully introduced 3D CAD, elevated our engineering drawings to British Standards, and overhauled all documentation processes to become fully digital and semi-automated. I have also rolled out 3D printing as a tool to enhance the precision and performance of our strain gauge installations on complex profiles. Currently, I am managing the start up of our own CNC machine shop with mill-turn, simultaneous 5-axis milling, and laser marking capabilities. However, I also help to maintain our quality management system. Furthermore, I am leading the development and implementation of an ERP system, which we are custom coding in-house to enhance the traceability of our operations and strengthen our commitment to continuous improvement. In the near future, I shall take on the responsibility of redesigning and optimising our standard load cell range in light of our new CNC machining capabilities. Outside PCM I am an active member of the British Society for Strain Measurement (BSSM), by whom I am certified as a Level 2 Strain Measurement Engineer. Once certified to Level 3, I plan to help deliver strain gauging and stress analysis workshops on behalf of the CERCO committee. Additionally, I am working towards chartership status with the IMechE.
