Background

About Jack Cochran

Jack Cochran is an architect, planner, and educator focused on the future of the city and the environment. He received Master's degrees in Architecture and Urban and Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia, and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota. He is a Project Architect at MHM in Knoxville, Tennessee, and a Lecturer at the University of Tennessee. Jack is also Adjunct Faculty at the Boston Architectural College, where he currently leads a yearlong Thesis course for Master of Architecture candidates, and has also taught advanced studios, community practice, and in Gateway, teaming with local Massachusetts non-profit clients. He has also taught at Wentworth Institute of Technology, where he led comprehensive studios and professional practice courses. He has also initiated a new entrepreneurship incubator at the BAC, called Hatch. Jack has worked as an architect or designer for Brooklyn-based Studio Modh, Leo A Daly in Washington, DC, and ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge, and as an urban designer or planner for the Galfione-Cox Design Studio in Charlottesville and Biko Associates in Minneapolis. He also co-founded Urbain DRC, a design/research collaborative that won First Prize in the inaugural Minneapolis Creative City Challenge for MIMMI, an installation that detected and displayed the collective mood of the city. Across the six companies, he has worked on a design education facility for Johnson and Wales University, two writing centers for the University of Pennsylvania, Konko Hostel in Jakarta, Foundation Kitchen in Boston, a residence on Shelter Island, a yearlong research project with Sony and the Japanese government on tactical urbanism, federal projects for the Architect of the Capitol, and the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Central Corridor Light Rail Line. While in graduate school, Jack was co-founder of the Charlottesville Community-Supported Fishery, which connected residents with local, responsibly-harvested fish and supported small-scale farms in southern Virginia. He was also lead editor for the School of Architecture’s student journal, Lunch, for which he led production of two main volumes and initiated an additional bimonthly publication. His thesis focused on reimagining the food system for an urban block.
