About Jack Coutts

As a software engineer and bioinformatician, I work at the intersection of biology, data science, and software development. My core skillset lies in developing software and data analysis solutions in the area of biomedical research.At The Francis Crick Institute, I develop critical applications used daily by scientists working in metabolomics and proteomics research. I also educate researchers in the ways they can, should, and should not apply statistical analysis and data science approaches to their research. I also write code that implements these approaches and I evaluate the workflows currently in use. One of my primary interests is the implementation and development of best practices, or preventing the misuse of technologies and methodologies. This has been true in all domains in which I have worked and extends as much to coding as it does to statistical analysis. Some of my more recent work has focused on the implementation of frequentist statistics in biological research, addressing the misapplication of statistical methods and the consequent misinterpretation of p values. In software development, I have been working to improve the robustness, maintainability, and interpretability of the scientific software I am working on.I am always learning and looking to address areas of weakness and consistently spend time improving my skills through reading, online courses, conferences, and hands-on projects. In my career, I aim to contribute to impactful projects that address real problems and create positive change. I'm drawn to multidisciplinary settings, particularly in research and non-profit contexts, where I can apply my diverse skills to complex problems at the intersection of technology and science.
