About Jack Dean
Dr. Jack Dean retired in January 2006 as President, U.S. Science and Medical Affairs (R&D), Sanofi- Aventis, Malvern, PA and as the Global Director of Preclinical Development for Sanofi-Aventis, SA (Paris). He joined Sterling Winthrop in 1988, as Director of the Department of Toxicology and was appointed Vice President, Drug Safety worldwide in 1990. From 1990-1992, he served as Director of Sterling Winthrop’ Pharmaceutical Research Center in Alnwick, England. In 1992, he was appointed Executive Vice President, Drug Development, where he managed Non- Clinical and Clinical Development, and Regulatory Affairs. From 1982-1988 He headed the Department of Cellular and Molecular Toxicology, Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology, RTP, NC. From 1979-1982, he headed the Immunotoxicology Section, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Toxicology Program, NIH, RTP. Following graduate school, Dr. Dean worked in the Department of Immunology (1972-79, Dept. Director 1975-79) at Litton Bionetics, Bethesda, MD doing research in tumor biology and immune function in cancer patients and tumor bearing animals on NCI contracts. Dr. Dean has a B.S. in microbiology and an M.S. in medical microbiology from California State University at Long Beach. He earned a Ph.D. from University of Arizona in molecular biology and minor in biochemistry (1972) from the Micro and Molecular Biology Dept. in the College of Medicine. Dr. Dean held adjunct professorships at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Duke University (1981-88). He held a research professorship (2006-2018) in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, College of Pharmacy, University of Arizona. He has edited 5 books and published 233 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Selected as the first recipient of the “Lifetime Career Achievement Award -Vos” from the Immunotoxicology Specialty Section, Society of Toxicology He was the recipient of the American College of Toxicology’s “Distinguished Service Award” in 2003. In 2005, the College of Pharmacy at the University of Arizona bestowed an honorary Doctor of Science degree. In 2006, the French Republic awarded him “Chevalier” of the Legion of Honor; an award given for his “contribution to medical and pharmaceutical research”. A recipient of the Mildred S. Christian Career Achievement Award from the Academia of Toxicological Sciences. President SOT (1995 - 1996); Vice President (1994 -1995); Council Member (1988 - 1990); Founding President, Immunotoxicology Specialty Section (1985).
