Background

About Jack Hughes

Developed and manufactured a water quality sensor using 3D printing that could measure both the concentration of chlorine and the water flow rate. This was achieved by making use of boron doped diamond electrodes. Experimental Neuroscience MRes Designed an analysis pipeline to speed up the analysis of susceptibility weighted images of traumatic brain injury patients using python. This data was then analysed to determine the correlation between the degradation within key areas of the brain with worse clinical outcomes. Established a computational methodology for the analysis and quantification of Schwann cell sorting during peripheral nerve repair. A set of functions were developed using matlab that determined both cell count and how closely the cells were grouped together. This was intended to replace the previous method of judging these criteria by eye. Neuroscience MSc Developed a suite of functions using octave to categorise and analyse the movements of genetically engineered fruit flies to determine whether their movements showed that they had developed the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Alongside this functions were developed to correct problems with the fly tracking software, which would lose track of flies during data capture. Robotics BSc 2nd year project: Development of multi-layered artificial neural net in the C++ programming language that made use of back-propagation. Group Project: Development of a human shaped robot capable of walking unaided using the principles of passive dynamics. My role involved the analysis of movement data and signals from the on-board sensors and the design of components for the robot using solidworks.
