About Jack Jane

As Assistant Organics Manager for Coastal Recycling, it was my responsibility to ensure that the company's green waste recycling and composting operations were compliant with ISO Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental Management Systems.My duties were to maintain the H&S of all the staff, plant and operations in this department, as well as controlling the quality and regulatory requirements of the compost product. This was a heavily operational and regulated setting with thousands of tonnes of material being managed with various large plant across multiple sites in Devon. I worked closely with the district councils, farmers and customers, building strong relationships and channels of communication.Drawing experience from my previous position as Compliance Officer, I was responsible for tracking the compliance requirements of multiple permitted activities, while also submitting planning and permit applications, transfers and surrenders. I carried out environmental monitoring fieldwork, interpreted the data and submitted reports to top management and to the regulatory bodies – addressing non-conformities with remedial action based on risk assessments that I helped to create. I submitted our quarterly tonnages to the regulators from across the whole company using our weighbridge monitoring software which required precisely analysing a large quantity of data. I graduated from Plymouth University in September 2016 in BSc Geology with First Class Honours. I was recognised on the Dean’s List Honour Roll in each of the three years. In the first and second year I achieved exam results in the top of the Earth Sciences cohort.My dissertation was a first-class geological mapping research project conducted in Montagne Noire, France. This involved twenty eight days of primary data collection and geological mapping, aiming to evaluate the history of the Variscan orogeny. The report focused on the nature of resulting nappe tectonics and crustal anatectic dome formation.I developed my knowledge of Earth Sciences in an industrial setting by moving into a laboratory role with the mineral resources company, Imerys and then becoming an engineering geologist with Geotechnics.With strong skills in project management, mathematics and public speaking, I intend to progress my studies of Earth sciences on a geological times-scale to tackle our present-day challenges, specifically in the fields of natural resources, waste management and environmental protection - including conservation, sustainability and renewable energies.
