About Jack Pink

I am an archaeologist and explorer specialising in the study of shipwrecks and Underwater Cultural Heritage. My work focuses on investigating historic ships, maritime heritage sites, and the changing relationship between people and the sea. I am also an experienced data scientist and have worked on two major national projects focused on linkage and enhancement of the UK, and England's Maritime Heritage Records. As one of the most senior underwater archaeologists in the UK government I help shape national heritage policy and ensure the protection of the UK’s maritime past. I hold a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Southampton, with an extensive research background in shipwreck archaeology, marine geophysics, and heritage data science. My work has taken me across the world, from intertidal wrecks on the UK’s coastlines, to deeper offshore sites, excavations in Lebanon, archaeological survey in India, and across Europe where I have led or contributed to major archaeological investigations. I have also worked with AI and machine learning tools to analyse maritime heritage records, applying computational techniques to reveal new insights from complex datasets. Beyond archaeology, I have experience in heritage policy, public engagement, and cultural strategy, contributing to major initiatives such as Southampton’s UK City of Culture bid and research into the impact of AI on governance and heritage management.
