Background
About Jack Sheehy
Jack is a blue carbon and natural capital scientist working at the intersection of economic, ecologic, and societal values to mitigate climate change. His main areas of expertise are large scale geospatial data, ecological modelling, social equity, and financial appraisal for marine species and habitats. These broad areas of technical expertise are integral to his eco-social-economics approach to natural capital valuation. Jack's main research interests focus on valuating natural capital to support marine conservation, biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and climate change adaption. To do this, he uses an interdisciplinary approach that integrates spatial data, ecosystem service evaluation, and predictive modelling to better understand ecological processes, and how eco-social-economic factors interact to inform decision making and policy. This then encompasses ecological analysis with valuation of ecosystem services, financial modelling and forecasting of revenues, and how these may be used, and affected, within different social contexts. Jack's publications include reviews of cetacean ecosystem service valuation, policy and eco-social-economic approaches to marine conservation approaches, integration of data sampling techniques, and predictive modelling and financial analysis of marine habitats for climate change mitigation. Jack is a Postdoctoral Research Associate working on the TRANSitions in Energy for coastal Communities over Time and Space (TRANSECTS) project. His background comprises a BSc (with Hons) in Marine Biology and Coastal Ecology and he primarily worked as a scuba diving instructor before completing an MSc in Marine Renewable Energy. After completing his MSC he worked in environmental and renewable consultancy before his PhD in Blue Carbon in Orkney. Jack then provided scientific, technical, financial, and project management support for marine and coastal conservation projects across the world as the Blue Finance Specialist at the Zoological Society of London. His work is firmly rooted in an eco-social-economics approach to marine conservation and planning.
