Background

About Jackie Mitchell

The focus of my current role as Deputy Director of Apprenticeships at the University of Wolverhampton is 'Quality Enhancement' for Higher and Degree levels apprenticeship provision, mostly related to Ofsted Inspection Readiness. I work collaboratively with the Director of Apprenticeships & Lifelong Learning, UoW colleagues, employers, stakeholders, and professional bodies both regionally and nationally to meet workforce/skills gaps. I started my Higher Education career as a lecturer in pre-registration Nursing Studies at Bangor University in 2002. I joined the University of Wolverhampton in 2011 as a Senior Lecturer, Institute of Health as course leader for the BSc Acute Care course, Return to Nursing Course and Health Assessment. I am a Registered Nurse (Adult) with an extensive range of teaching experience and clinical expertise, with a critical care clinical nursing background; intensive care and high dependency settings. I have taught and assessed at Diploma, Degree and Master’s level across a variety of Pre and Post Registration Courses within the Institute of Health. In 2017 I was the award leader for two of Health Education England’s trailblazer test sites for the Nursing Associate Foundation Degree; a newly created support role to registered nurses. I qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1994 with a Diploma in Nursing Studies and graduated from Manchester University with a BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies in 1996. In I completed the ENB 100 Intensive Care qualification at Keele University and in 2006 I graduated with a Masters in Medical Ethics and Law at Keele University. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA)(Now Advance HE). I am at the post viva stage of a Professional Doctorate in Health and Wellbeing at the University of Wolverhampton having conducted a qualitative study exploring the experiences of registered nurses working with trainee nursing associates in acute hospital settings. I am an End Point assessment (Apprenticeship) external examiner and have held External examiner roles at two other HEIs in England since 2016. I moved from being the 'Apprenticeship Strategic Lead' within the Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing at the University in 2021 to my current role. I am interested in following and being contacted by LinkedIn colleagues with an interest in and experience of the complexities of delivering Apprenticeships within Higher Education settings, Ofsted, Ofsted Readiness, and all things Nursing!
