Background
About Jackie Tenute
Ahnii, Boozhoo (Hello) I am an Ojibwe/Potawatami Anishinaabe Kwe, Thunderbird and Otter Clan from Neyaashiinigimiing First Nation. I feel that part of my role at my current position as Indigenous Counselor, is to empower and support Indigenous students into the next phase of their life in a way that is respectful, and reflective of Indigenous culture. When we honor and respect ourselves, others, and the world we live in, we create balance. We often term this as living “mino-biimaadiziwin” – the good way of life. I am a counselor/therapist with background in grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, sleep challenges, individual and couple counseling and often integrates Indigenous traditional knowledge and ceremony into session work. I also work with time management; semester plans and other post-secondary success strategies. I offer culturally appropriate counseling services, cultural sensitivity workshops (both the Kairos Blanket Exercise and Jann Derrick’s Box Circle, and others), women’s full moon ceremonies, as well as offering mainstream clinical skills within a mindfulness based, solution focused practice. I provide clients with a comfortable and supportive environment where we work together on understanding how many real-life experiences may contribute to symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which I integrate into the therapeutic process to help lessen anxiety, stress, and decrease PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) symptoms. I am a practitioner of Sandtray-Worldplay therapy. Sandplay is a powerful, therapeutic expressive arts, “hands on” method that enables and clarifies our intuition’s natural capacity for healing. I also facilitate connections with academic coaches, faculty, and staff at my current employment to help create sustainable, solution focused plans for future academic and personal success.
