About Jackson Smith

As a geologist, I have had the opportunity to contribute to a variety of undergraduate and professional projects involving fieldwork, mapping, and geologic sampling across Utah and the intermountain west. After earning my degree, my passion for geology and scientific research first led me to work as a field geologist, where I gained valuable experience in surveying mining claims, core sample analysis, core drill operation, XRF analysis, geochemical sampling techniques, performing land research, and writing executive summaries on varied mineral deposits. In 2021, I accepted an offer to join the Utah Geological Survey, where I managed the Natural Resources Map & Bookstore while providing geologic field work for the UGS and providing my expertise for public inquiries. In 2023, I joined the UGS Geologic Information and Outreach program. In my current role, I create translated (technical to non-technical) publications for a broad audience, answer public inquiries, deliver geoscience presentations to public and private organizations and provide geoscience education resources to K-12 teachers and educators. My quintessential objective is to enhance public awareness of and appreciation for Utah's amazing geology. As a science educator and communicator, I find that being able to positively impact the next generation of scientists and boost scientific literacy and learning to students and the general public in Utah is deeply meaningful and fulfilling.
