Background

About Jaclyn Roach

The last few years of my life have been spent in classrooms (in-person & virtual) with Regina Public Schools and Northern Lights School Division, learning about who I am as an educator and a leader in my field. These experiences have taught me so much about myself, including solidifying my love for learning. After graduating from the University of Regina, my experiences teaching in Saskatoon Public Schools exemplified my ability to be flexible, hardworking, organized, and my love for lifelong learning. It taught me how to collaborate with others and recognize that sometimes we need to adjust our plans in order to make things work for everyone. During my time teaching, I was confident reaching out to students who needed some extra guidance and I truly believe that spending the time to get to know my students well made me a stronger educator and showed my students that they mattered. I also learned a lot through teaching in inner-city schools and EAL programs about working with students from every walk-of-life in a judgement-free and compassionate way. My time in between teaching experiences, while I ran my business from home (Mommy Connections Regina), was a practice in passion, connection, efficiency, and my ability to support people in a personal way. The majority of my job owning MC consisted of planning and organizing programming, while juggling all of the balls in the air. I also excelled at facilitating group discussion and helping moms find connection with one another and the community around them. One of the skills that was fostered was my ability to help people through life transitions. With MC, my focus was to create relationships and I believe this is a skill that easily translates to any other opportunity. Since returning to teaching, I have been on temporary contracts with RPS and NLSD, and have maximized every opportunity. I have been grateful for all of my experiences and have learned so much from each school I've been at and staff I've worked with. Mostly, this time spent in the classroom has illuminated to me the need to decolonize our systems and move beyond the way things "have always been done." I have developed more passion for making change and for impacting the way that our systems function. This time has very strongly reinforced my love of working with youth and helping them to view the world in new ways. All of the roles I've held in my life have given me the opportunity to grow and learn and become a better individual and I am excited at the idea of bringing that into a new space and continuing to pursue my passions.
