Background
About Jacob Altman
At King's College School Cascais I have acted as Founding Head of The Science Department. In this role I have developed and established a cohesive and holistic Science curriculum focusing on aspects of both the Cambridge Lower Secondary Curriculum, IGCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics curriculums and progressing towards the IB. During my time as head of department I have emphasized the high academic outcomes of our students. This has been achieved through instilling a culture of genuine academic curiosity which goes beyond what is offered in the curriculum, engaging in regular practical based enquiry (including local field trips) and a broad co-curricular experience available to most age groups at the school. We focus not only on the well known discoveries outlined in our curriculum, but also integrate both recent and less well sung findings to provide a more encompassing and diverse education. During my time at Fairfield High School, I have acted as a Teacher of Science where I taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics at KS3 and KS4 level. Additionally, I acted as the whole school Head of Numeracy. This role acted as a TLR whilst I continued my full time position as a Teacher of Science. This leadership position allowed me to foster close cross curricular ties with other departments in the school to provide an improved and more holistic approach to numeracy at the school. I take pride in my ability to cater for both EAL and SEN/D needs. Whilst at Fairfield I led on the implementation of audio resources for blind students within my department, working closely with my then SENCo. This work was in collaboration with Bristol University as part of my MSc in Neuroscience and Education. These resources have since been adapted to benefit dyslexic and ADHD students as well as those who lost learning during COVID.
