About Jacob Hershiser

I describe myself as an educator, linguist and researcher. Language dominates the center of my academic and professional career; as a linguist, I am fascinated by the ways in which our language makes up our identity. Currently, that manifests in my job as a Language & Literacy therapist, where I work with students with various language and learning disorders. In my previous undergraduate research, I focused on documenting the mixed language of Spanish-Arabic bilingual speakers in Santiago de Chile, highlighting the ways in which these speakers use Arabic to portray their mixed identities. As an educator, I am a strong proponent of the Socratic Method in my teaching and the Love & Logic method of social/emotional/behavioral management. I firmly believe in harnessing my students' curiosity to help them make the integral connections between their disciplines, to think more deeply about each, and to grow as open-minded, critical thinkers. I have taught and mentored students of all ages and backgrounds - from NYC kindergarteners to international college students. In the past, I have visited over 20 countries and have lived for brief periods in Jordan and Israel. In addition to English, I speak Spanish, Arabic and Hebrew. In my free time, you can find me reading an Arabic text, baking, doing various adventure sports, playing guitar or hanging out with my cat, Jasper. I am currently based in Boulder, CO, but am always looking for new places to explore!
