About Jacob Hopper

I am a data science graduate with an administration background seeking to use my qualitative and quantitative research experience to build a career in data and policy analysis. During my undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, I worked as a student researcher for the City of Mississauga's Smart City Initiative. Here I conducted interviews, analyzed case studies, and researched best practices for data security in an urban context to develop a report for the program's steering committee. After graduating in spring 2020, I worked in the film industry, supporting the COVID testing program of Star Trek: Discovery, Season 4. In this position, I managed medical databases and kept consistent, accurate data pertaining to COVID tests and appointments. Post-graduation, I obtained a Data Science diploma from Concordia Univerity, specializing in data visualization, machine learning, and neural networks. From this experience, I gained proficiency in Python and SQL. Most recently I managed the exam invigilation at McGill University during the Winter 2021 and Spring 2022 exam sessions. This position involved creating schedules, keeping precise records, and leading a team of over 100 invigilators through two exam sessions daily with more than 1,500 students present at a time. I am motivated by complex challenges that require innovative solutions. Areas of interest include: smart cities, big data, machine learning, urban planning, public policy, and government.
