Background
About Jacob Monroe
Dr. Jacob Monroe is a Research Analyst at IESVic. Dr. Monroe’s research is focused on the evolution of integrated energy systems as guided by decarbonization policy development, climate dynamics, technology shifts, and adaptation of social norms. Dr. Monroe has been responsible for managing the development of an energy modelling platform that integrates a database of Canadian energy system information (CODERS), a suite of energy modelling frameworks, and a collection of visualization software to create an effective medium for communicating model findings with policy makers. Dr. Monroe has both recruited and managed twelve different software engineering co-op students to build the various components of the modelling platform. He has advised several graduate students using components of the platform for their research. Additionally, he has used several of the existing energy modelling frameworks to chart decarbonization pathways for the western provinces of Canada. Dr. Monroe’s practical knowledge of energy systems and software combined with his experience in managing engineering students to complete computing tasks qualify him to manage the development of energy system models. Dr. Monroe’s research interests include developing new tools to evaluate model uncertainty and assess the feasibility of decarbonization pathways and policy, communicating model insights with policy makers and their teams, and exploring the solution space of modelling frameworks while highlighting their respective uncertainties. Dr. Monroe holds a PhD in Civil Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering, both from North Carolina State University. I was awarded a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation to perform research on the evolution of smart grids and the application of blockchain technology for peer-to-peer energy markets. My research was reapplied to assess the potential for distributed ledger systems to support smart water platforms in urban regions. My skillset includes applications of linear programming for civil engineering systems, geospatial analysis using ArcGIS software, computer aided drafting using AutoCAD software, functional and object-oriented programming using both the Java and Python languages, and use of the entire suite of Microsoft Office software. I received my Engineer Intern (EI) Certification from the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors on September 21, 2020. Certificate Number: A-30074
