For 10+ years I have worked alongside engineers, manufacturers, scientists and doctors to take complex hardware challenges and turn them into devices that perform and are enjoyable to use. Today, I consult for start-ups and engineering teams developing the next generation of products in healthcare, manufacturing and climate technology. For example, I worked with a manufacturer of high temp. 3D Printers on their new flagship model. They wanted a more approachable design, one which balanced functional needs with those of cost and human factors. I met with stakeholders from engineering, material sciences, production and sales to re-imagine an architecture that addressed these competing priorities. On the exterior effective design (and some new mfg. methods I introduced) resulted in a distinct visual identity at a lower cost. For another team of scientists and engineers tackling greenhouse gases, a design sprint explored various architectures for their technology. By visualizing different form factors early on, they were able to make decisions in a larger context, and “break the anchor” that the layout of their functional prototypes had formed in the team’s minds. By combining my techniques for solving problems of usability, visibility and manufacturability with your subject matter expertise we can build a design which delivers on all it promises.
