Background
About Jacob Woods
I have had several years of experience with broadcasting and specifically the role Meteorology plays into the television/radio industry. As early as the age of 12 years old, I was able to make weather forecasts, produce a show that included hand-picked graphics, and form an entire full weather hit for our middle school news. This accelerated into high school where I was blessed to attend a center of learning that could allocate a substantial amount of resources for the media program. We had cameras with teleprompters, a full green screen wall, news anchor desk, etc. We had the entire studio! To add, an entire control room with students directing the newscast each and every morning that we would record before the teachers and staff played it to the students thereafter. This experience laid a sturdy foundation as I enrolled at Mississippi State University, one of the most prestigious Broadcast Meteorology schools in the nation. Throughout my time as a student, I have sharpened my skillset on the green screen and for on/off camera experience as well ranging from my vocal/mechanical delivery on TV to producing content, editing graphics in Baron, and practicing journalism. Continuing my leadership from high school, I have become heavily involved in out local Meteorology chapter; the East Mississippi NWA/AMS Chapter. Through this organization, I have served as a member, Secretary, and now Vice President where I devote additional time to ensure our chapter remains unified, developed, and career-ready. Another role I value heavily is being an Ambassador for the College of Arts & Sciences where I meet with incoming/transferring prospective college students who plan to pursue Meteorology. Furthermore, I improved my online weather communication by working with MemphisWeather.net where I operated their social media platforms to share weather information 3-4 days a week. I served as one of their intern positions from January 2022 through January 2023, so I was fortunate to work several severe weather events, winter storms, and record heat/cold. This job taught me how to diligently and urgently spread weather information which is a skill I consider necessary for Broadcast Meteorology. Once I resigned as an intern for MemphisWeather.net, I began training as a part-time On-Camera Forecaster for WVUA-23 News in Tuscaloosa, AL. While we have a Baron system at school, WVUA-23 uses the WSI MAX software, which makes me moderately skillful with both. Currently, I work at WVUA-23 every-other weekend while completing the remainder of my undergraduate education at MSU.
