I had to list 'Arts and Crafts' as my primary industry of expertise, because LinkedIn fails to recognize the beauty industry. They have dairy and fishery as potential jobs, but not hair. Weird. I started my training at 16 here in Maryland. After one year, balancing school and an apprenticeship became too difficult and I stopped my cosmetology courses. After graduating from Sandy Spring Friend’s School, I moved to Wisconsin to attend Beloit College. I noticed there were very few salons in the area. Friends began to ask me for cuts, and so I began to practice. In October of I moved to London to attend the Vidal Sassoon School of Hairdressing. London taught me more about hair in 10 months then I had ever learned before. Years of playing around with hair gave me confidence, but it was the Sassoon training I recieved that lent structure, shape and balance to my work. I also took courses in Wella Color while attending Sassoon. Wella is a beautiful pre-blended permanent color from Germany, and it’s what I currently use. After I moved back to Maryland, I worked at Salon Jam in Takoma Park for two years before moving over to Aveda Bethesda. While at Aveda, I learned about Redken Shades EQ, a semi-permanent color line with beautiful shine, and subtle color enhancment. After departing from Aveda Bethesda in January of 2005, I took a few months off to travel and explore my options. In June of that same year, I opened my first independent studio salon at Lux Studios. After 8 years at Lux, I was recruited by my former manager to join her salon, Symmetry Salon Studios. Symmetry offers the same privacy Lux used to have, but with upgraded amenities, forward-thinking owners, and an amazing staff. I opened my private studio at Symmetry in July of 2013.
