About Jad Abukasm

I'm a multidisciplinary social science researcher. I currently work as a research associate in gambling studies. Through cross-cultural reconciliation theories, I am currently part of the Kahnawa:ke Project where I study the meaning of gambling in the Indigenous community of Kahnawa:ke in Quebec. Through qualitative interviews and analyses, our goal is to understand what is the role and place of gambling and gambling institutions in a contested sovereign territory where governance within a settler colonial state is at stake. However, my educational background is in critical AI studies in the field of international politics, political theory, and postcolonial studies. My masters dissertation attempted to map the ideological roots of AI and consequently its modern uses, effects, and harms in our contemporary societies. Such impacts range from data justice, gender and racial biases as well as automated weapons to name a few. I am currently preparing my PhD application where I wish to expand my research on critical AI and hopefully to facilitate the study of these technologies by providing a comprehensive outline of its root and effects for effective research, policy guidance, and to spark a conversation on a collective census within the field.
