Background
About Jaipal K. Tuttle
Other than quantitative finance, and singing and dancing, direct-action philanthropy is what it's all about for me now with an emphasis on literacy projects. If you live anywhere and you are illiterate you are at a huge disadvantage. If you live in a developing country and are illiterate you are even more disadvantaged. If you are an illiterate female in a developing country you are basically a slave. Literacy is freedom. What do I mean by direct-action philanthropy? I mean that I only get involved in projects where I can see exactly where the money is going. I have many years of experience in quantitative finance. From the early days of statistical arbitrage to modern AI-driven stuff I never dreamed of. I am a celebrity in Vietnam and best known for singing traditional Mekong Delta folk songs (Vong Co) and opera (Cai Luong). One highlight has been singing on live national television - which I must say was terrifying! Another highlight has been racking up millions of views on social media channels and other assorted television programs. And somehow along the way I became some sort of model and did stuff with Vietnam International Fashion Week. I am a celebrity in Cambodia best known for singing pre-1975 Golden Era rock and 1,500-year-old ritual music (Mohari). One highlight has been racking up millions of views on social media channels. However, the thing I am most proud of is becoming the student of a third-generation disciple of the legendary Royal Court Singer and Dancer whose name is phonetically pronounced "Iam Thiey". That and studying on the campus of The Royal University of Fine Arts where I am surrounded by this country's next generation of brilliant artists. I live an extremely healthy lifestyle and my (getting) old body thanks me for it. At age 53 I was still windsurfing huge winter waves on the North Shore of Maui. And I mean huge. My advice to all of you is to treat your body well. Exercise. Eat well. Stretch. Academic research? Well, studying evaporating two-dimensional black holes in low-energy string theory with Professor Leonard Susskind at Stanford was hard but. this was harder. I accidentally (really I mean accidentally) became an "expert" in 19th-century Vietnamese literature. I was honored to have a television interview/documentary made about me. Now I'm wrapping my head around understanding 1,500-year-old Khmer songs that were never written down until recently. What's next? I want to become a Khmer Mask Dancer (Lakhon Khol). I'm 61 now and giving myself about 20 years to get it done.
