Background
About Jake Downey
As a Docent at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History, I assist in bringing science education to traditionally underfunded schools. I also lead public education programs and provide customer service to visitors of all ages at the museum. With a double major in Ecology, Evolution, & Biodiversity (EEB) and Program in the Environment (PitE) and a minor in Statistics, I am passionate about freshwater ecology and its application to management and community engagement. As a member of the Graham Sustainability Scholars Program, I am leading a project to create STEM lesson plans and sustainable cooking recipes for the Ypsilanti District Library's summer programs. I also helped to run the Burke Museum's DIG Field School in Jordan, Montana while participating in paleontology field work with Dr. Lucas Weaver. These experiences have shown me the importance of outreach, engagement, and accessible science education in motivating action against climate change. Through them, I have learned skills in science communication, education, and academic research.
