About Jake Eberts

Recovering China watcher and investigative analyst now in public health communications. My background is in foreign affairs, and I'm fluent in Mandarin Chinese, having lived variously in Taiwan and mainland China. Now, I work for 1Day Sooner, which advocates for the use of human challenge trials — clinical trials wherein fully informed, consenting, adult volunteers are exposed to a pathogen to test a vaccines, treatments, or other interventions — and the people who participate in them. I fell into this line of work after participating in a vaccine challenge trial for Shigella, a group of bacteria that causes dysentery. I got dysentery, which, it turns out, is not a fun disease.
