As the former head of executive communications for NatWest Bank in London, HP Enterprise in Palo Alto and CIBC in Toronto, I've been in charge of writing and producing AGM speeches, annual reports, media releases, earnings statements, keynote addresses and just about every other communications vehicle known to the corporate world. Over the course of my career, I have, of course, seen tremendous change in communications technologies and capabilities. On today's social media platforms and search engines, a one-person enterprise can create a corporate profile every bit as impressive and compelling as a global multinational by finding ways to apply the talent and creativity required to make it happen. I still find it stunning that an ordinary person with limited skills can present a professional-quality video productions instantly to global audiences on social media which garner thousands, if not millions, of views-and at virtually zero cost. That's the upside. On the other hand, as many politicians, university presidents, Olympic athletes and business leaders have learned in recent years, any communications missteps can be transmitted equally rapidly and widely to unsympathetic audiences with serious real-world consequences, including brand destruction, loss of personal reputation and even forced resignations.
