About James Balcombe

I'm a full-stack software engineer with a passion for backend development and a background in education. I love solving problems, manipulating and analysing data, onsen, and sci-fi. My path to software engineering began whilst working as a Computer Science teacher, I wanted to be able to develop an idea for a tool that teachers would find useful, and so started brushing up my skills and learning a lot of new ones. Eventually I left teaching and participated in an advanced software engineering course. I've build several full-stack webapps using Node/Express with React and Vue frameworks on the frontend. As part of a small team I developed a React-Native app for Android - mysouschef. I enjoy learning new tools and languages, so I took on the challenge of Ruby on Rails to produce a full-stack app in just 3 days, which was a lot of fun. I am based in Tokyo, where I live with my wife and daughter.
