Background
About James Baxter
As a third-generation public affairs journalist with media, journalism, entrepreneurship, and business leadership expertise, I've served as a sportswriter, political journalist, bureau chief, editorial writer, entrepreneur, founder, and management consultant. With 30+ years in Canadian media and my global perspective, I work alongside clients collaboratively, serving as an advisor, leader, and sounding board. My areas of expertise include international trade, economics, healthcare, energy, climate change, North American politics, and Indigenous affairs. I have in-depth knowledge of the legislative process and Canada's Constitution and have called Parliament Hill my home base for many years and served in several roles in Alberta, notably as Bureau Chief for the Alberta Legislature. Helping organizations improve performance and achieve their goals, I advise organizations when planning a significant change, when they need strategic direction, or when responding to a crisis. I recently advised a national cultural organization on their COVID-19 communication strategy for their more than stakeholders. An entrepreneurial milestone during my career was my founding of iPolitics, Canada's first purely digital political news service iPolitics, known for its independent, non-partisan, and real-time coverage of Canadian politics. It is considered a valuable information source used by many of Canada's top business leaders, elected politicians, government officials, public policy influencers, and decision-makers. The digital platform serves subscribers through a network of digital and social media sites, delivering daily political news and industry briefs, a quarterly magazine, policy-oriented podcasts, and specialized parliamentary monitoring services. iPolitics was acquired by Torstar in 2018. I enjoy collaborating with others and am interested in connecting with like-minded individuals who share common interests and enjoy cooperating on business, politics, the media, public policy issues, arts, and community pursuits. In addition to my professional interests, I'm also an avid football coach, skier, golfer, canoe tripper and sugar bush operator.
