About James Briggs
My research aims to understand: i) how the cell types of our body form in the embryo; and ii) how we can control cell fate in cultured stem cells for regenerative medicine. For my PhD I worked on single cell transcriptomic methods to map out the gene expression changes leading to every cell type in the embryo. As a Schmidt Science Fellow in Feng Zhang's lab at the Broad Institute I am now focussing on developing tools to manipulate gene expression in single cells, to test how the observed gene expression dynamics control cell fate. I'm applying these cells to generate therapeutically relevant cell types in culture.
